Healthy Nutrition on the Web

Clients often ask me for my recommendations for websites with recipes that are delicious, nutritious, quick and easy. I have several sources with many recipes that fit the bill, but no single "go to" source* that focuses solely on recipes that are delicious, quick (or quickly prepped), easy and healthy. This post is the first in a series that will be dedicated to those criteria and I will add some suggestions to bump up the health factor a notch or two.

This chili recipe is in regular rotation in our house every fall and winter because it ticks all the boxes - delicious, healthy, easy, short prep, plus it makes a generous amount that can feed a crowd or give you leftovers to enjoy/freeze. Recipe instructions are provided for both stove top and a slow cooker, though I've only made this using the latter.

Flavor and Health Tweaks

  • Increase the number of garlic cloves

  • Increase the spices based on your heat preference, especially the cumin and chili powder

  • Add 2 TBL of unsweetened cocoa powder

  • Substitute chicken or turkey bone broth for some or all of the water

  • Not a tweak, but a tip: use a potato masher to shred the chicken if it hasn't fallen apart when the chili is done cooking

  • Top with: a few slices of avocado, plain greek yogurt (instead of the sour cream)

Conversions & Adjustments

  • 1 kg boneless chicken parts

  • Substitute about 800 g of passata for the crushed tomotoes

  • 530 g dried black beans or an even split of black beans and pinto beans

  • 1 liter of chicken stock plus 250 ml water
